1950: What is this thing called love | ||||||
Al has finally released his historical tape "The Show of the Century" I was part of the 11 piece band of Stan Getz which played at the Apollo Theatre the third week of August 1950. It was 7 straight days with 4 stage shows weekdays and 5 on the weekend. Every show was packed and as you can hear the audience was very receptive. The program opens with "4 Bros" inasmuch as Stan had made a name for himself from the hit recording with Woody Herman in 1948. The curtain closes and Sym Sid introduces Bird in his personal New York style. We get off the stand and that's my chance to start my tape. Bird plays 4 titles. We get back on the stand ready to play for Sarah as the curtain opens. I love Sarah and this was really a beautiful performance. I managed to record Bird's 4 titles twice on the following day and they are interspersed with Sassy's part of the show. Too bad the tape ran out on "I Cried for You" but as a bonus I've added a rare live recording of Buddy Rich sitting in with Bird at some club in Philadelphia. |
